Pivot Mode (Chart Breakdowns)

Rearrange and compare your data with flexible pivoted views in Doowii.

Doowii’s Pivot Mode gives you more control over how data is grouped and compared in your visualizations, without needing to rewrite your query. Pivot Mode, accessed in the Advance Chart Builder, allows you to transform flat data into multi-dimensional breakdowns that reveal deeper insights.

What You Can Do with Pivot Mode

  • Dynamically pivot rows into columns

  • Compare multiple measures across categories

  • Create custom cross-tab views directly within your chart

  • Explore side-by-side comparisons (like gender vs. grade level, or school vs. program)

Step-by-Step: How to Use Pivot Mode

1

Open the Advanced Chart Builder

Run your query and open the Advance Chart Builder.

2

Select Columns

Select each of the columns to be included in the chart. At least 3 columns must be selected, including the metric (which must be a numerical value), the breakdown, and the axis dimension.

3

Apply Filters

Apply chart filters to refine the data you'd like to display.

4

Select a Chart Type

Select the desired chart type or visualization from "Chart" tab on the right side of the Advanced Chart Builder.

5

Select Metric Aggregation

Choose your aggregation method (e.g., Sum, Count, Average) for the metric to be displayed.

6

Activate Pivot Mode

Open the "Columns" tab and activate “Pivot Mode”. This will enable pivot functionality on your dataset and allow you to visualize your data with your selected breakdown.

7

Configure Pivot Dimensions

Once "Pivot Mode" is activated, review the "Row Groups", "Values", and "Column Labels" sections. In each section, at least one of the 3 selected columns should be listed. If you do not see this, deactivate "Pivot Mode" and return to step 2.

  • Under “Group Rows”, drag and drop the dimensions you want on the vertical or horizontal axis (e.g., Grade Level, Year, etc.), depending on your chart type and orientation.

  • Under “Column Labels”, drag the dimension you want to use as your breakdown (e.g., Gender, Cohort, etc.).

  • Under “Values”, select the numeric field you want to summarize (e.g., Total Students).

8

Customize & Save

Preview your pivoted chart and switch to the “Customize” tab to adjust axis labels, tooltips, and legend as needed. Once satisfied, select "Save chart".

Pivot Chart Examples

Example Question: What is the distribution of undergraduate students enrolled, showing enrollment year and age group for each year between 2015 and 2023?

Chart Type: Line Chart

Common Troubleshooting Tips

  • Blank Chart? Make sure you’ve selected at least one group, one pivot, and one value field. All three are required.

  • Unexpected totals? Check your aggregation method in the Values section.

  • Duplicate values or missing columns? Review the Pivot Column field—avoid using IDs or unique values.

  • Too many columns? Use filters in the “Data” tab to narrow the dataset before applying Pivot Mode.

  • Confusing layout? Try removing one group or pivot field to simplify the view, then rebuild.

When to Use Pivot Mode

Use Pivot Mode when you need:

  • Breakdown comparisons (e.g., Enrollment by Gender and Grade)

  • Multi-dimensional summaries (e.g., Test scores by Program and Subject)

  • A flexible way to explore data combinations without changing your original query
